Warhammer: Forge of War

If you are a fan of Warhammer, and you likely are if you are hanging out here, then this book will likely steal your attention. I mean you will likely be completely glued to it and forget about everything else. It would be nice to see more “graphic” novels on the Fantasy end instead of having it so heavily weighted on the 40,000 side. If you haven’t done so already you might want to read Condemned by Fire which picks up where this one leaves off. This story may have been a bit more captivating if it went deeper into the prior battle friendships, alliances and combatant prep. Overall a truly enjoyable book!

Warhammer 40K Assault on Black Reach (Starter Set)

If you are just starting out in the Warhammer 40k world then the “starter set” is a great place to begin. It has what you need to get up and running immediately including over 50 miniatures, templates and a very comprehensive rule book. If you are on a low budget or simply don’t want to invest too much to begin with then this is a good option. Just the cost of the hardcover rule book itself is as much as this entire starter set.

Like all things there is a down side but hey, it’s all a trade off. The two opposing forces are Space Marines and Orks with this set. Either one may or may not be your army of choice but you certainly get acquainted with the game. With this set the rule book is 95 pages compared to the hardcover 300 page book. The difference is the hardcover gives you a lot more info about the background of various armies and good tips on painting.

Another great benefit to the starter kit is it is very easy to put together. It is beginner friendly with snap-fit models. You will find these models a “walk in the park” compared to the more complex models found in the Forge-World miniatures. No epoxy is needed because there are no gaps to seal and there is very little touch-up work. If you want to play right away you can assemble an entire force in about an hour but if you take more time in assembly I expect your entire force will be ready in a few hours and looking really good! You might find with the Orks that their arms are a bit loose and you will need to do some gluing.

The “Battle for MacCrage” set is good if you want to delve into the world of painting. That will be the Space Marines versus the Tyranids. A little more story background would be good especially for the beginners. Highly recommended box set!
