For magicians to produce an object with a magical manner, there are many different approaches he could take. One of the most effective one is by the use of a magic apparatus. Among the magic apparatuses for production effects, the most common one is to bring an hidden object rapidly into the location of appearance by pulling with a thread of elastic cord.
Magicians have brilliant ideas to apply this principle in their magic. They often find inspirations in daily life. For example, a magician once saw a mousetrap. He was fascinated by the cleverness of the spring lever. A magic trick is then born with a similar device. The spring trap is replaced with a lever attached to the object to be produced. The lever is pulled back and fixed with a trigger. The object is hidden in a secret place. When the trigger is pulled, the lever shoots forward and brings the object into position with high speed.
We see similar device being used in a classic stage effect called the Card in Balloon. The spring lever is set up behind a wooden stand. A card is glued to the lever. The lever is pulled back before the performance. The card is now hidden behind the stand. A balloon is put on the stand. Then at the right moment, the magician triggers the device, the lever swings up quickly and breaks the balloon. The card appears on the stand which looks like it was from the inside of the balloon.
In close up magic, we also see a number of examples utilizing this principle. The source of force to bring the object quickly can be gravity, centrifugal force or mechanical motor. In one phrase of the ring routine, Ring Leader by Greg Wilson, we see the use of gravity to bring in the ring rapidly. A classic coin trick by T. Nelson Downs demonstrates the use of centrifugal force. A magic wand is used here. The wand is prepared in a special way for the trick. One end of the wand slit open to about one inch. The split is opened to gain a larger diameter than normal.
The trick goes like this: the wand is swung quickly in the air and a coin magically appears on the tip of the wand. The magician then pulls it off and produces another one. The coins are gimmick with a small ring soldered perpendicularly on its back. The coins are thread onto the wand and hidden inside the palm of the performer. When the wand is swung, one coin is released at a time. The centrifugal force would bring it to the tip and the split end would stop the coin there. What a Beautiful effect.
At this point I believe you are well prepared to produce your own magic device to produce anything you desire. Take a step further and adjust the way the object is moved, the way of concealment and the way to provide the energy. You will have an innovative magic effect that blows people’s mind.
